Well, this part is never easy. It's not in our nature to be catty, but some outfits that came down Sunday's red carpet left us feeling a little speechless. We liked the color of Jennifer Hudson's tangerine gown, but found it unflattering to her décolletage. Nicole Kidman's look fell as flat as her bangs. Reese Witherspoon threw us for a loop with all those hair extensions. Penelope Cruz looked a little too Vegas, Hillary Swank was a bit boring, Anne Hathaway's first on-stage look washed her out, and Amy Adams, oh, Amy Adams. We were so close to giving you best-dressed, but can't comprehend the necklace that was worn on top of your dress.

There, we said it!

Agree or disagree?

The last American veteran of World War I has died.

At first, it didn’t seem like the like the Missouri-born Frank Buckles would ever see combat. He was repeatedly turned down by military recruiters on account of his age (he was only 16 when the war broke out) but successfully enlisted when he convinced an Army captain he was 18.

“A boy of [that age], he’s not afraid of anything,” said Buckles, who had first tried to join the Marines. “He wants to get in there.”

“I went to the state fair up in Wichita, Kansas, and while there, went to the recruiting station for the Marine Corps,” he told the AP in 2007. “The nice Marine sergeant said I was too young when I gave my age as 18, said I had to be 21.” A week later, Buckles returned to tell the Marine recruiter he was 21, only to be informed that he wasn’t heavy enough.

Buckles then tried for the Navy, but was turned down on account of his flat feet. Finally, he tried for the Army. When a captain asked for his birth certificate, Buckles said they weren’t issued in Missouri at the time of his birth, but that there was a record in the family Bible. “I said, ‘You don’t want me to bring the family Bible down, do you?’” Buckles remembered with a laugh. “He said, ‘OK, we’ll take you.’”

In Europe, Buckles served as a driver, having been told by an old sergeant that if he wanted “to get to France in a hurry, then join the ambulance service.” He chauffeured dignitaries around Britain before convincing his superiors to send him to France. Although he never saw combat, Buckles told George Will in 2007 that he “saw the results.”

Returning home a corporal, Buckles still had a yearning for adventure. After a stint in business school he joined the White Star Line and traveled the world. He was in the Philippines when the Japanese invaded in 1941, and spent most of the next four years in POW camps. When his camp was finally liberated in 1945, he weighed less than 90 pounds.

“There was no mercy as far as the Japanese were concerned,” said Buckles.

After the Great War, he settled down and married, raising cattle in West Virginia. A vocal advocate for a national World War I memorial in Washington, D.C., Buckles told a Senate panel that it would be “an excellent idea.” In 1999, he received the French Legion of Honor from then-President Jacques Chirac.

When asked by the Associated Press if we he would do it all again, Buckles answered, “without a doubt.”

Frank Buckles was 110.

Only 5 states do not have collective bargaining for educators and have deemed it illegal. Their ranking on ACT/SAT scores:

South Carolina - 50th
North Carolina - 49th
Georgia - 48th
Texas - 47th
Virginia - 44th

Wisconsin is currently ranked 2nd. Welcome to the race to the bottom.

It's an interesting piece, because it's all over the internet in a Google Search. There is no citation for the piece, and the comments are left mostly byanonymous users at hundreds of newssites and comment sections covering the union strike in Wisconsin.

This is astroturf at its finest. A low-paid intern or first year employee cutting and pasting a talking point into comment sections as they register, too lazy to change it up, and too rushed to bother creating real profiles to post from.

The tipoff for me was the use of educators. The use of the word "educators" instead of teachers is a code word meant to make you think of the word educate, which is so much sexier than teaching.

The problem is the "statistic," no matter where it came from, is bunk. Focusing on the students who took the ACT/SAT doesn't cover the whole educational picture. It covers those most likely to graduate across a state (knowing full well that school districts within a state, and even a city, vary wildly). It doesn't touch on dropout rates at all.

Let's look at those dropout rates by county, instead of by state, and see what we get. Here is a list from 2006 in USA TODAY.

The top five counties for graduation rate include one in VA, one in NC, two in Maryland, and one in Texas.

The bottom five counties for graduation rate are Detroit, Baltimore, New York, Milwaukee, and Cleveland.

3 out of 5 of the top are in states without collective bargaining. 5 out of 5 states at the bottom have collective bargaining and fail their students. Milwaukee, in Wisconsin, has a graduation rate of lower than 50%. Care to explain how collective bargaining is helping educators there?

Let's not make the same mistake of the astroturfed teacher's union commenters. The dropout rate, even by county, has a lot more to do with living conditions in big cities, money available for the schools, city, state, and local governance, and yes, even how states track and present their data. It's not an effective way to argue for collective bargaining in either direction to point to SAT scores or dropout rates, especially 90% of the states use collective bargaining.

But you do have to wonder who paid for this astroturf. Who is attempting to poison the debate about the power and influence of teacher's unions in such a manner? Why are they afraid of the truth? It doesn't seem like the type of thing someone confident in their teaching abilities would offer up to the public at large. It seems more like power politics with a heavy whiff of propaganda, intended to denigrate those who support the Wisconsin governor by calling them stupid.

Too bad I caught them. Call it the benefit of a Texas public school education.

Sunday was a big night for NYC grad student Luke Matheny. The Delaware native not only got the chance to attend the Oscars but he went on to win one, quite a surprise and an honor for the young filmmaker. At the 2011 Oscars he won the award for the live action short with his “God of Love,” and he is still graduate student in New York University’s film program.

What is his film “God of Love”, a short that he also stars in? On his website he describes it as, “The story follows the adventures of lounge-singing darts champion Raymond Goodfellow, whose prayers are answered — literally — when he receives a package of passion-inducing darts.”

Randy Newman didn't expect to win an Oscar for Best Original Song at 'The 83rd Annual Academy Awards' (Sun., 8:30PM on ABC). "My percentages aren't great," he said. "I've been nominated 20 times and this is the second time I've won."

That win came in 2002 for the movie 'Monsters, Inc,' while this was another Pixar collaboration: 'Toy Story 3.' He performed the song 'We Belong Together' earlier in the show, and said it was indicative of his desire to be "good television."

Unfortunately, he was advised by the Academy that "it's not really good television to take a list out of your pocket and thank a lot of people."

In Newman's defense, he didn't pull out a list, but he did produce from his mind a list of people to thank. "I just have to thank these people," he said. "I don't want to. I want to be good television so badly."

We think in failing the Academy's suggestion, Newman was good television indeed.

Up to 100,000 rally in Madison while hundreds show up in dozens of other cities to combat the Republican-backed measure that would limit collective bargaining rights for most public workers in Wisconsin.

Reporting from Madison, Wis. — Nearly two weeks into a political standoff, tens of thousands rallied in Madison and in dozens of cities around the nation to oppose a bill that would severely limit collective bargaining rights for most Wisconsin public employees.

Joel DeSpain, spokesman for the Madison Police Department, said the rally — in steadily falling snow — drew between 70,000 and 100,000 and may have been the largest protest in Madison since the Vietnam War.

Geithner said the dangers to the global economy of disruption to the oil markets are “self-evident” but nonetheless said the challenges are more manageable than many of those that policymakers faced two years ago when global economy began to unravel.

“The world’s got a lot of experience in managing the tensions that could come with short-term impact on commodity prices,” Geithner told reporters at a Bloomberg Breakfast. He added, “It’s not rocket science.”

Geithner said the U.S. economy continues to grow stronger, although still not at a pace to put a significant dent in the unemployment rate. He said commodity prices were one of three large challenges facing the world’s economies, the others being the state of economies in Europe and the politics of fiscal reform.

Geithner spoke cautiously about the current fight in Congress to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government. “I think both sides recognize that we’re at a point where we don’t want to take any risk of jeopardizing the recovery underway,” he said.

But he declined to discuss further the administration’s bottom lines or cite cuts favored by Republicans that President Obama would find unacceptable.

Geithner played down the need to move instantly on entitlement reform, saying a multi-year agreement aimed at deficit reduction over the next five to 10 years is the first and more important step that should be taken by Congress and the administration.

He said that the idea “that the fundamental and the sole challenge of fiscal reform now is entitlement reform is not right,” he said.

He noted that provisions in the new health-care law would have a significant impact on the long-term deficit and cautioned that any moves by the Republicans to repeal or undo those changes would result in a significant setback to the cause of entitlement reform.

Geithner said he and other administration officials have been meeting with congressional leaders to begin to gauge the political climate for dealing with the country’s fiscal problems, short and long term, but indicated no consensus has emerged.

Duke Snider, elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980 following an 18-year major league career in which he hit 407 home runs, passed away on Sunday morning following an undisclosed illness at the Valle Vista Convalescent Hospital in Escondido, Calif. He was 84.

Born September 19, 1926 in Los Angeles, Snider made his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Once he assumed duties as the club's every day center fielder, Snider totaled 20 home runs in nine straight seasons, from 1949-1957, hitting a league-best 43 in 1956, and finishing as the National League Most Valuable Player runner-up in 1955, helping to lead the Dodgers to their only World Series victory.

We shed a tear in Cooperstown for the man affectionately tabbed by his fans, 'The Duke of Flatbush,'" said Jeff Idelson, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. "There was no one classier or more easy going than Duke Snider. He was nationally renowned for his smooth fielding and powerful bat -- as evidenced by hitting more home runs in the 1950s than anyone else. He is still today revered by Brooklynites everywhere for patrolling center field in Ebbets Field with grace and dignity, leading the underdog Dodgers to five pennants and their only World Series title in New York, in 1955. Above it all, he was a fan favorite for his style of play, personality, accessibility, and fondness for playing stickball with kids in the street of Brooklyn."

Snyder comes in third when the great New York center fielders of the 1950s are discussed, but that's due in part to the fact that he faded relatively early. From 1954 through '57, though, Snider led the major leagues with 165 home runs and 459 RBI.

In 1958, when Snider was still only 31, the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. It's often been said that the L.A. Coliseum, the Dodgers' new home, sapped Snider's power. It probably didn't help, but the problem was a knee injury that too often kept Snider out of the lineup; in four seasons in Los Angeles, Snider actually slugged .523 and posted an adjusted OPS right in line with his career mark.

After a one-season return to New York with the Mets, Snider finished his career with a terrible, now-forgotten 1964 season with the San Francisco Giants.

Snider stayed in the game as a scout and minor-league manager, worked as a broadcaster for the expansion San Diego Padres from 1969 through '71, filled the same role for the Montreal Expos in 1973, worked as the Expos' hitting coach in 1974 and '75, then returned to the booth and stayed for a dozen seasons.

Snider eventually retired to the life of baseball-card shows and celebrity golf; in 1995, Snider and fellow Hall of Famer Willie McCovey pleaded guilty to tax evasion after failing to report income from selling his autograph. The amounts of money involved were relatively small, and both Snider and McCovey were sentenced to two years probation and paid small fines.

In Brooklyn, Snider will be fondly remembered for as long as there are still people alive who remember the Borough's Dodgers, most especially for playing a huge role in the Dodgers' only World's Championship, hitting a big three-run homer in Game 4, and two more home runs in the Dodgers' 5-3 win over the Yankees in Game 5.

Everywhere else, Snider's legacy is ensured. Without him, there would be no "Willie, Mickey and the Duke."

The 2011 Oscar nominations are in! Which means it's now time for us to gaze into our crystal ball and post our official Oscar predictions in time for the Feb. 27 ceremony.

Should Colin Firth start writing his speech? Will Natalie Portman dance away with her first Oscar? And what will win Best Picture: 'The King's Speech' or 'The Social Network'?

Check out our final winners predictions below.

The Nominees:
'Black Swan'
'The Fighter'
'Inception'
'The Kids Are All Right'
'The King's Speech'
'127 Hours'
'The Social Network'
'Toy Story 3'
'True Grit'
'Winter's Bone'

Will Win: 'The King's Speech'
Dark Horse: 'The Social Network'

Commentary: For months, it seemed like nothing could stop 'The Social Network' from winning Best Picture, especially after it took home four Golden Globes in January.

But in recent weeks, the Facebook frontrunner has been dethroned by 'The King's Speech' after the British period piece won prizes from the Producers Guild, Directors Guild and Screen Actors Guild of America.

Now we're left with a very important question: Will the Academy continue to award innovative, more modern movies, as they did with 'No Country For Old Men' and 'The Hurt Locker'? Or will they go for the more emotional, classic Oscar bait choice? Anything can happen, but for now, we think Harvey Weinstein may want to get his speech ready.

BEST DIRECTOR

The Nominees:
Darren Aronofsky, 'Black Swan'
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, 'True Grit'
David Fincher, 'The Social Network'
Tom Hooper, 'The King's Speech'
David O'Russell, 'The Fighter'

Will Win: David Fincher
Dark Horse: Tom Hooper

Commentary: Just like in the Best Picture race, Best Director has been narrowed down to two contenders: 'The Social Network' and 'The King's Speech.'

But in this category, 'The King's Speech' has a bigger hill to climb. Tom Hooper up against a veteran director (Fincher) who is well overdue for an Oscar, and who fits in with the recent winners in this category -- Ang Lee, Martin Scorsese, the Coen Brothers, Danny Boyle and Kathryn Bigelow. 'The Social Network' may be losing steam in other categories, but we still "like" its chances here.

BEST ACTOR

The Nominees:
Javier Bardem, 'Biutiful'
Jeff Bridges, 'True Grit'
Jesse Eisenberg, 'The Social Network'
Colin Firth, 'The King's Speech'
James Franco, '127 Hours'

Will Win: Colin Firth
Dark Horse: None

Commentary: We could go on, and on and on about how under-the-radar contenders like Jesse Eisenberg or James Franco could pull off a last-minute upset, but we'd just be kidding ourselves. This race has been Colin Firth's to lose from the get-go, and after winning the Critics' Choice, the Golden Globe and the SAG Award, there's no stopping him now. Firth will win the Oscar on Feb. 27. You can go ahead and bet the farm.

BEST ACTRESS

The Nominees:
Annette Bening, 'The Kids Are All Right'
Nicole Kidman, 'Rabbit Hole'
Jennifer Lawrence, 'Winter's Bone'
Natalie Portman, 'Black Swan'
Michelle Williams, 'Blue Valentine'

Will Win: Natalie Portman
Dark Horse: Annette Bening

Commentary: For awhile, it seemed like this race would turn into a showdown between the veteran actress (Bening) and the pretty young ingenue (Portman). But between the awards she's won, her pregnancy and engagement, this story will likely end with Portman dancing away with the Oscar after all.

Sure, 'Black Swan' didn't get as many nominations as some were predicting; it received "only" five total. But the momentum remains in Portman's favor following her victory at the SAG awards -- so much that we'd be shocked if anybody else won.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

The Nominees:
Christian Bale, 'The Fighter'
John Hawkes, 'Winter's Bone'
Jeremy Renner, 'The Town'
Mark Ruffalo, 'The Kids Are All Right'
Geoffrey Rush, 'The King's Speech'

Will Win: Christian Bale
Dark Horse: Geoffrey Rush

Commentary: Though he may not be as big of a lock as Colin Firth, we can't imagine anyone winning Best Supporting Actor besides Christian Bale. It's the type of performance the Academy loves to honor, and he's already won practically every major award in sight. The remaining four nominees simply won't be able to put up a fight.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

The Nominees:
Amy Adams, 'The Fighter'
Helena Bonham Carter, 'The King's Speech'
Melissa Leo, 'The Fighter'
Hailee Steinfeld, 'True Grit'
Jacki Weaver, 'Animal Kingdom'

Will Win: Melissa Leo
Dark Horse: Hailee Steinfeld

Commentary: This remains the only open acting category. Conventional wisdom and statistics show that Melissa Leo is the obvious frontrunner, and she'll probably win. But keep an eye out for newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. She's in the second-most nominated movie of the year, and if there's one category in which voters love to honor an up-and-comer, it's here. We're sticking with Leo, but don't be surprised if Steinfeld's name is called on Oscar night.

BEST DOCUMENTARY

The Nominees:
'Exit Through the Gift Shop'
'Gasland'
'Inside Job'
'Restrepo'
'Waste Land'

Will Win: 'Inside Job'
Dark Horse: 'Exit Through the Gift Shop'

Commentary: 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' may be the most popular and widely-seen movie of the bunch, but we're liking the topical 'Inside Job's' chances here. (The film tracks the reasons behind the 2008 financial crisis.)

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

The Nominees:
'How to Train Your Dragon'
'The Illusionist'
'Toy Story 3'

Will/Should Win: 'Toy Story 3'
Dark Horse: None

Commentary: 'How to Train Your Dragon' and 'The Illusionist' are both strong movies, but when you're up against a Best Picture nominee -- not to mention a Pixar movie -- you pretty much have no shot at winning. In fact, we'll go ahead and call 'Toy Story 3' a lock in this category.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

The Nominees:
'Another Year'
'The Fighter'
'Inception'
'The Kids Are All Right'
'The King's Speech'

Will Win: 'The King's Speech'
Dark Horse: 'Inception'

Commentary: After getting snubbed for Best Director, you'd think the Academy would leap at the chance to give Christopher Nolan a makeup Oscar wherever they could. Unfortunately, it won't be in this category, as Nolan is up against Best Picture frontrunner 'The King's Speech.' Sure, Nolan may have won the WGA, but remember: 'The King's Speech' was ineligible in that race. This one is a completely different ballgame.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

The Nominees:
'127 Hours'
'The Social Network'
'Toy Story 3'
'True Grit'
'Winter's Bone'

Will Win: 'The Social Network'
Dark Horse: None

Commentary: Even if 'The Social Network' doesn't win Best Picture, Aaron Sorkin's fast-talking screenplay is a lock to win Best Adapted Screenplay, and his speech should be one of the highlights of the evening.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

The Nominees:
'Biutiful' (Mexico)
'Dogtooth' (Greece)
'In a Better World' (Denmark)
'Incendies' (Canada)
'Outside the Law' (Algeria)

Will Win: 'In a Better World'
Dark Horse: 'Biutiful'

Commentary: Javier Bardem's Best Actor nomination proves the Academy -- or at least the acting branch -- is a fan of 'Biutiful.' Still, we think Denmark's 'In a Better World' will keep its Golden Globe-winning momentum going all the way to the Kodak stage.

BEST ART DIRECTION

The Nominees:
'Alice in Wonderland'
'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I'
'Inception'
'The King's Speech'
'True Grit'

Will Win: 'Alice in Wonderland'
Dark Horse: 'The King's Speech'

Commentary: All signs point to 'The King's Speech,' especially after it won the Art Directors Guild award. However, Tim Burton's eye-popping sets may be too hard for voters to resist. (See: 'Sleepy Hollow.')

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

The Nominees:
'Black Swan'
'Inception'
'The King's Speech'
'The Social Network'
'True Grit'

Will Win: 'True Grit'
Dark Horse: 'Inception'

Commentary: Wally Pfister's beautifully lensed work on 'Inception' won him top honors from the American Society of Cinematographers. But he's up against Roger Deakins, who lensed the 10-time nominated 'True Grit' and who has yet to win an Oscar (if you can believe it). We think 2011 may finally be his year.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

The Nominees:
'Alice in Wonderland'
'I Am Love'
'The King's Speech'
'The Tempest'
'True Grit'

Will Win: 'The King's Speech'
Dark Horse: 'Alice in Wonderland'

Commentary: Jenny Beavan is a past winner ('A Room With a View'), so she's already in good graces with the Academy. Plus, the fact that she designed the costumes for the Best Picture frontrunner should be enough to push her past dark-horse contender and two-time winner Colleen Atwood ('Alice in Wonderland').

BEST FILM EDITING

The Nominees:
'Black Swan'
'The Fighter'
'The King's Speech'
'127 Hours'
'The Social Network'

Will Win: 'The Social Network'
Dark Horse: 'The King's Speech'

Commentary: This category is often a telling sign of what movie will win Best Picture, but no matter what happens in that race, 'The Social Network's' fast-paced and stylized editing will likely be too hard for voters to resist here.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

The Nominees:
'How to Train Your Dragon'
'Inception'
'The King's Speech'
'127 Hours'
'The Social Network'

Will Win: 'The King's Speech'
Dark Horse: 'The Social Network'

Commentary: Alexandre Desplat is long overdue for an Oscar, and his 'King's Speech' score is the exactly the type that voters love to honor. But after the Golden Globes, voters could go for 'The Social Network' instead. Let's be honest: Who wouldn't want to see Trent Reznor accept an Oscar?

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

The Nominees:
'Coming Home' - 'Country Strong'
'I See the Light' - 'Tangled'
'If I Rise' - '127 Hours'
'We Belong Together' - 'Toy Story 3'

Will Win: '127 Hours'
Dark Horse: 'Toy Story 3'

Commentary: This is a wide-open field, which means that any movie could win, especially 'Toy Story 3,' which has the most recognizable name (Randy Newman). But don't count out A.R. Rahman, who won two years ago for 'Slumdog Millionaire' and who may very well win again this year.

BEST SOUND MIXING

The Nominees:
'Inception'
'The King's Speech'
'Salt'
'The Social Network'
'True Grit'

Will Win: 'Inception'
Dark Horse: 'The Social Network'

Commentary: Since it doesn't have much of a chance in the major categories, expect 'Inception' to sweep the sound and visual categories.

BEST SOUND EDITING

The Nominees:
'Inception'
'Toy Story 3'
'TRON: Legacy'
'True Grit'
'Unstoppable'

Will Win: 'Inception'
Dark Horse: 'True Grit'

Commentary: 'Inception' is the biggest and most tech-savvy movie of the bunch, so look for an easy win here. Its only main competitor, 'True Grit,' feels like a distant second at best.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

The Nominees:
'Alice in Wonderland'
'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I'
'Hereafter'
'Inception'
'Iron Man 2'

Will Win: 'Inception'
Dark Horse: 'Alice in Wonderland'

Commentary: Once again, 'Inception's' high-profile status -- not to mention dazzling visual effects -- is more than enough for a win here. If there's a surprise, it'll come from 'Alice in Wonderland' -- but don't count on it.

BEST MAKEUP

The Nominees:
'Barney's Version'
'The Way Back'
'The Wolfman'

Will Win: 'The Wolfman'
Dark Horse: 'The Way Back'

Commentary: We know what you're thinking: Academy Award Winner 'The Wolfman'? Sure, it sounds crazy, until you realize the makeup was done by six-time winner Rick Baker. Expect him to pick up a seventh win on Sunday.

BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM

The Nominees:
'Day & Night'
'The Gruffalo'
'Let's Pollute'
'The Lost Thing'
'Madagascar, carnet de voyage (Madagascar, a Journey Diary)'

Will Win: 'Day & Night'
Dark Horse: 'The Gruffalo'

Commentary: For more on the nominated films, click here.

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT

The Nominees:
'Killing in the Name'
'Poster Girl'
'Strangers No More'
'Sun Come Up'
'The Warriors of Quiugang'

Will Win: 'Strangers No More'
Dark Horse: 'Killing in the Name'

Commentary: For more on the nominated films, click here.

BEST LIVE-ACTION SHORT

The Nominees:
'The Confession'
'The Crush'
'God of Love'
'Na Wewe'
'Wish 143'

Will Win: 'Na Wewe'
Dark Horse: 'Wish 143'

A campaign which began in hope is in danger of crumbling into despondency for Scotland with a creditable performance against France followed by an abject display against Wales.

Scotland have bounced back before, most notably last autumn when a drubbing by New Zealand was followed by a famous win over South Africa - and they will need to do so again

Otherwise, with a visit to tournament favourites England next up, they could find themselves in another wooden spoon decider with Italy come the final weekend.

Wing Sean Lamont has not minced his words about the "abysmal" display against Wales, telling his team-mates they needed a players-only meeting where they could "do some finger-pointing and soul-searching".

Head coach Andy Robinson has called for "a performance that restores the pride in all Scotland supporters". Given Scotland's recent poor starts, he will be stressing the importance of hitting the ground running and early points would no doubt buoy the Murrayfield crowd, who have not seen a Scotland try for 15 months.

Tries are something that Brian O'Driscoll has never found hard to come by, especially against Scotland. The Ireland captain, who ran in a hat-trick against the men in dark blue in 2002, scored the first of his Six Nations tries against Scotland in 2000 and now needs just one more to equal the championship record of legendary Scottish wing Ian Smith.

After scraping through against Italy, Ireland looked in better shape against France and will be kicking themselves that they didn't make the most of their chances.

They will certainly fancy themselves to win on Sunday although will be all too aware that Scotland have a habit of putting a spoke in their Six Nations wheels. Ten years ago, they upset Ireland's Grand Slam hopes in a match delayed until the autumn by the Foot & Mouth crisis.

And last year, the Scots upset Ireland's farewell to Croke Park by denying them the Triple Crown with their first away win in the Six Nations for four years.

Defeat for Scotland would leave them in real danger of the wooden spoon and dash Ireland's hopes of a Triple Crown so there is plenty at stake. The famed "conviviality" of the Celts has been in the news this week but don't expect much of it to be on show at Murrayfield on Sunday.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• Scotland's win in Dublin last year brought to an end a run of eight successive Six Nations defeats to Ireland.

• Ireland have won the last four Six Nations meetings at Murrayfield.

• Scotland are 9th in the IRB world rankings; Ireland are 6th.

Scotland

• Scotland have conceded a try within the first 10 minutes in six of their last eight Tests (and within the first nine minutes of all of their last three).

• Scotland did not score a try at Murrayfield in 2010. Their last try there was Graeme Morrison's against Fiji in November 2009 - since then, they have played seven matches at Murrayfield without scoring a try.

• Scotland's 19 errors against Wales was the highest match tally so far in this year's Six Nations.

Ireland

• Ireland have lost three of their last five away matches.

• Ireland have failed to score a try just once in their last 13 matches (v Australia in November). They have scored at least one try in their last 13 Six Nations match (since losing 16-12 to Wales in March 2008).

• Ronan O'Gara is 13 points short of the 1,000 Ireland points mark. He would be the fifth man to reach four figures.

Ireland's incoming leader has promised to work to renegotiate the country's crippling 85bn euro bail-out next week.

Enda Kenny of Fine Gael said he would fight for a cheaper loan deal from the International Monetary Fund and Europe.

His party is now the largest in the 31st Irish parliament, the Dail.

Meanwhile, Sinn Fein has won 13 seats so far in the Irish general election, a gain of eight on its representation in the last Dail.

Fine Gael, Labour and Sinn Fein have all won record numbers of seats but FG's rivals Fianna Fail suffered a crushing defeat. Mr Kenny said it was "a democratic revolution at the ballot box".

Votes are still being counted but Fine Gael is expected to be the largest party in the Republic's parliament, without having an overall majority.

Final numbers for the Dail parliament will not be decided until late on Sunday.

Mr Kenny plans to start fighting for a cheaper loan deal on 4 March when the European People's Party, to which Fine Gael is affiliated, meets in Helsinki. He will follow that up at the European Council in Brussels the following week.

Mr Kenny said the IMF/EU bail-out was "a bad deal for Ireland and a bad deal for Europe".

"We are not going to cry the poor mouth, other than to say the reality of this challenge is too much. I don't want to talk about difficulties, I look for co-operation, consensus and support across Europe," he said.

"We want to restore our pride at home and abroad. Our country is back in business."

Dublin is buzzing with speculation about a visit to Ireland by US President Barack Obama at the end of May.

The possible trip is likely to be discussed next month when Mr Kenny goes to Washington for the annual St Patrick's Day celebrations at the White House.

President Obama has distant Irish roots in the village of Moneygall in County Offaly.

If the president does go to Ireland, it may not be the only high-profile visit to Dublin this year.

The Queen may visit the Irish Republic for the first time, in a sign of how Anglo-Irish relations have been transformed by the peace process.

The incoming taoiseach also pledged to probe deep into the heart of the Irish banking crisis which has left the taxpayer saddled with crippling debts which some analysts believe could ultimately cost closer to 200bn euros.

"We do need to find exactly what went wrong here, who benefited from this and where decisions were made," he said.

"This is bridging the gap between government and people - that chasm there was very bad for democracy."

Meanwhile, Mr Kenny is weighing up options for a new government with his centre-right party Fine Gael on course to form a coalition with Labour, or a collection of independents if the numbers stack up.

He launched a fierce attack on the outgoing government, led by Fianna Fail, over its poor communications and lack of openness.

"I give you my guarantee that the incoming government is not going to leave the people in the dark about what is happening whether it is good or whether it is bad," he said.

Mr Kenny, who secured the biggest single vote in the country in his Mayo constituency, said he wanted a quick resolution to talks on a new government.

Fine Gael is on course for 75 plus Dail seats, just a handful shy of majority single party government in the 166 strong Dail.

Irish politics

* Dominated by two parties, Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, which emerged after Irish nationalists split over the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty
* Fianna Fail was once seen as more centrist, Fine Gael as more conservative, but differences have blurred
* The Labour Party was the traditional junior partner in coalitions until 1997
* The Green Party came into its own in 2007 when it joined Fianna Fail in coalition
* Sinn Fein, shunned by the mainstream because of its IRA connections, held nearly as many seats as the Greens in the outgoing parliament

Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin put on a brave face and said he believed that Fine Gael had managed to secure support from floating voters.

"There's a soft vote there for Fine Gael and Labour, just as there was for us for years," he said.

The party's biggest casualty was Mary Coughlan, the outgoing deputy prime minister, who was punished by voters in Donegal South-West as they opted to support an independent candidate in her own backyard.

Hers was one of several dynasties brought to a dramatic end.

"It's been a very difficult day for all of my colleagues, many of whom have lost their seats," she said.

Other big names to suffer included ministers Mary Hanafin, Barry Andrews and Conor Lenihan, himself from a powerful Fianna Fail family and brother of the outgoing finance minister Brian Lenihan who narrowly retained his own seat.

The Haughey name will also be absent from the Dail for the first time in 54 years after Fianna Fail's Sean Haughey lost his seat.

The Greens - former coalition partners - were wiped out. None of their TDs - two of whom held Cabinet posts up until a few weeks ago - were brought back to the Dail.

Leader John Gormley had always faced a tough battle in Dublin South East and blamed his failure on being in a government which made savage cuts.

"We have suffered a major defeat, but the party will regroup, we will continue. We're a party with a set of beliefs and values and a vision for the future. We have great people here. We're going to rebuild this party," he said.

Labour had one of its best ever performances with the prospect of supporting a coalition.

"That is the most likely outcome, there's no doubt about that," leader Eamon Gilmore said.

Enda Kenny : Ireland's next leader vows bailout review

Ireland's opposition parties have made big gains in a general election focused on the country's economic woes as angry voters ended the 80-year dominance of Fianna Fail.

The Fine Gael party was leading the pack, but the shape of the next government is hanging in the balance as counting continues for a second day.

By Sunday morning, 57 seats had been won by Fine Gael, 30 by Labour, 13 by Fianna Fail, 12 by Sinn Fein and 13 by smaller parties and independents.

It takes 83 seats for a majority in the Dail, the lower house of the parliament. Fine Gael was widely expected to form a coalition government with Labour.

But with Fine Gael sensing that it might win nearly 80 seats, party leaders also talked about forming alliances with independent candidates.

Enda Kenny, party leader, destined to become prime minister, pledged to move quickly to form a government.

"People were waiting to take revenge on Fianna Fail, and they have certainly done so with great gusto," said Batt O'Keefe, one of 18 Fianna Fail incumbents who chose not to seek re-election.

Fine Gael polled 36.1 per cent support with the first round of counting completed in all 43 constituencies.

Labour, Fine Gael's possible coalition partner, was running second at 19 per cent while Fianna Fail polled a historic low of 17 per cent.

The Green Party, which had six seats in the Dail and was Fianna Fail's junior partner in government, lost all its seats.

'Political earthquake'

Newspapers described the routing of Fianna Fail, which has dominated Irish politics for the last 80 years, as a "political earthquake".

Irish voters polling preferences were a response to the country's 13 per cent unemployment, tax hikes, wage cuts and a humiliating bailout that Ireland had to accept from the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In elections going back to 1932, Fianna Fail had never won less than 39 per cent of the vote and had always been the largest party in the Dail.

Fine Gael ("tribe of the Irish") and Fianna Fail ("soldiers of destiny") were born from opposing sides in Ireland's civil war of the 1920s, and many see little difference between them on the issues.

Fianna Fail, however, was leading the government when the property boom collapsed in 2007, and it put taxpayers on the hook to bail out Ireland's failing banks.

Brian Cowen, the outgoing prime minister, had fallen to record low popularity and resigned as Fianna Fail party leader even before the election campaign kicked off.

He had wanted to hold the election in March, but agreed to hold it early in a deal to win confirmation of the hated EU-IMF bailout.

"Fianna Fail will come back," said new party leader Micheal Martin, who bucked the tide to hold his seat.

The new government, like the last, will be constrained by the terms negotiated for the $92 bn credit line from the European Central Bank and the IMF.

The loan is contingent on Ireland cutting $20.6bn from its deficit spending over the coming four years and imposing the harshest cuts this year.

However, Kenny has pledged to try to negotiate easier terms for repaying the loan.

He has also promised to create 100,000 new jobs in five years, and to make holders of senior bonds in Ireland's nationalised banks shoulder some of the losses.

Kenny, a former teacher, is the longest serving lawmaker in the Dail. He is viewed as a steady pair of hands, but he has his task cut out to fulfil his pledge on the bailout.

Fine Gael said it would seek to balance public finances mainly through cuts, not tax hikes; it would also reform the health service and abolish 150 public bodies.

King Abdullah needs to implement political reform, scholars claim, as students plan 'day of rage'

Leading intellectuals in Saudi Arabia have warned that grand financial gestures are no substitute for meaningful political reform, after King Abdullah unveiled a $36bn (£22bn) social welfare package in advance of planned anti-government protests next month.

In a statement released on Thursday, a group of Saudi scholars called on the royal family to learn from recent uprisings in the Gulf and North Africa and to start listening to the voices of the kingdom's disenfranchised young people, some of whom are planning a "day of rage" on 11 March. Several Islamic thinkers, as well as a female academic and a poet, are among those adding their names to the declaration.

"The Saudi regime is learning all the wrong lessons from Egypt and Tunisia," said Shadi Hamid, director of research at the Brookings Doha Centre. "The unrest in the region is not fundamentally economic, it's fundamentally about politics. Economics plays a role but what the events of the past few months have shown us is that Arabs are looking for freedom, dignity and democracy - and if the Saudi leadership can't see that, then they're in trouble."

Saudi Arabia's 86-year-old monarch returned home this week from three months in hospital abroad, and immediately announced a vast package of welfare measures including new education and housing subsidies, the creation of 1,200 jobs and a 15% pay rise for all government employees.

But analysts believe the king - who promised far-reaching political reform when he ascended to the throne in 2005, only to make little effort in tackling the political status quo - has misjudged the grievances of his population.

The kingdom remains an absolute monarchy with few outlets for dissent, with public policy-making concentrated almost entirely in the hands of the ruling family.

"We're seeing a lack of vision on the part of Saudi leaders right now," said Hamid. "They're trying to bribe people into quietude. It's cynical, predictable, and it's not necessarily going to work, at least in the long run - I don't believe anyone thinks Saudi Arabia is going to fall tomorrow, but it's not immune from unrest. It's actually quite surprising that King Abdullah hasn't taken this opportunity to move faster on political reform."

Despite its oil wealth, Saudi Arabia features many of the underlying demographics that have helped spark rebellions in other Arab nations. Almost half the population is under the age of 18 and, unlike in other Gulf states, some of which boast close to full employment, 40% of 20- to 24-year-old Saudis are out of work.

Many young people are turning to online social media sites to exchange information and ideas."The level to which young people in Saudi Arabia are connected to the rest of the world, and particularly the Arab world, is staggering," Mai Yamani, a prominent Saudi author, told the Guardian.

"The flow of ideas being shared amongst this generation has no borders. The same anguish and demands being voiced by Arab youth elsewhere is inspiring youth in Saudi Arabia as well. In this climate, the days of using oil money to secure the subservience of citizens is over."

So far the announcement on Facebook of a day of protest next month has been met with little open enthusiasm; in contrast to similar calls in Egypt and Tunisia which garnered tens of thousands of supporters, the Saudi web page is followed by only a few hundred supporters.

But in a kingdom where the current laws and social mores work predominantly to the benefit of ethnically Saudi males following the Sunni branch of Islam, some analysts have estimated that up to 20 million of the kingdom's 27 million people - including women, Shia Muslims and some 7.5 million guest workers from Asia - feel dangerously detached from the state, amounting to a potentially potent groundswell of opposition.

"Saudi Arabia has had an undercurrent of unrest and anger towards the regime for decades now, it's always been there bubbling underneath the surface," claimed Hamid. "The question is when it's going to explode."

But he added that calls for a complete overhaul of the monarchy remained unlikely. "We have two regional models of change: one is the Egyptian, Tunisian and Libyan model of overthrowing the regime, and the other is the Moroccan and Jordanian model of shifting from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy, and that applies to Saudi Arabia as well. I don't think there's a hunger for a complete break in the system."

(CNN) -- The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously Saturday night to punish Moammar Gadhafi's government in Libya for violence against unarmed civilians, hours after the nation's budding opposition picked a former top official as its interim leader.

The draft resolution includes an arms embargo, asset freeze and travel bans for Gadhafi and several of his family members and associates. It also refers the situation unfolding in Libya to the International Criminal Court.

"This resolution will be a signal (to) put an end to the fascist regime that is still in existence," said Abdurrahman Mohamed Shalgham, Libyan ambassador to the United Nations, who urged action Friday in an emotional appeal. He'd earlier renounced support for Gadhafi, calling him Saturday "a leader who loves nobody but himself."

Military and security forces loyal to Gadhafi have killed more than 1,000 people, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has estimated.

Meanwhile, Libya's deputy amassador to the world body, Ibrahim Dabbashi, indicated Saturday that he and fellow diplomats "support ... in principle" a caretaker administration to lead Libya under the direction of former Justice Minister Mustafa Abdul Jalil.

City councils in areas no longer loyal to Gadhafi chose Jalil to head an interim government that would represent all of Libya and ultimately be based in Tripoli, according to Amal Bogagies, a member of the coalition of the February 17 Uprising, and a separate Libyan opposition source. Both are based in Benghazi.

Jalil was in Gadhafi's government through February 21, when he quit to protest the "bloody situation" and "use of excessive force" against unarmed protesters, according to Libyan newspaper Quryna. Days later, he told a Swedish newspaper he had evidence that Gadhafi ordered the 1988 bombing of a jet over Lockerbie, Scotland, that killed 270 people.

Protests began February 15 in the eastern city of Benghazi, Libya's second largest. It and many others are now thought to be under opposition control, according to eyewitnesses. There have been numerous reports of widespread violence, some of it perpetrated by foreign mercenaries and military and security forces loyal to Gadhafi.

Libya's foreign minister said earlier Saturday that talks are underway between Gadhafi's government and figures in the eastern part of the North African nation.

Benghazi-based opposition spokesman Jalal Igallal, however, strongly knocked down reports of any discussions between anti-government figures and officials supportive of Gadhafi. He urged Foreign Minister Musa Kasa to say who is being talked to, if such negotiations are in fact ongoing.

Early Sunday, Saif al-Islam Gadhafi -- one of Moammar' Gadhafi's sons and a prominent member of his government -- told CNN's Nic Robertson that he was confident the regime could survive the unrest and ultimately reunite Libya. Saif Gadhafi added that he wanted this reunification to be accomplished without violence.

While CNN does have staff in some cities, the network could not independently confirm reports for many areas in Libya. But CNN has compiled information through telephone interviews with witnesses.

Tripoli itself was noticeably tense but largely quiet overnight Saturday, its streets largely barren except for police, armed men in civilian clothing and young people with sticks at some intersections. One man, who is not named for safety reasons, described an "eerie feeling" around the capital, even as fear of violence drove many people to hunker down in their homes.

"You can feel the tension and the anticipation that something big is going to happen," he said. "Everyone is waiting for it."

The situation at the main airport, about 20 miles south of Tripoli, was far more chaotic. Several thousand people camped outside in makeshift tents, waiting for the chance to leave the war-torn country.

More than 200 Arab organizations and a group of 30 prominent intellectuals from across the Middle East and North Africa urged global bodies, including the Security Council, the European Union and the African Union, to take action to limit further death and destruction.

"We fear we may be witnessing the calm before the storm," said their statement. "The window of opportunity to prevent further atrocities from occurring is closing fast. The people of Libya need you to act quickly and decisively."

The group urged the international community to devise contingency plans for intervention and impose immediate sanctions on the Libyan regime.

"We appeal to you as leaders who have the power to bring an end to this horror," the statement said. "Your failure to do so would be a lasting stain on the responsibilities of world leadership and on humanity itself."

U.S. President Barack Obama also weighed in Saturday, telling German Chancellor Angela Merkel to "coordinate our urgent efforts to respond to developments and ensure appropriate accountability," according to a White House statement. In some of his strongest wording to date, Obama said, "when a leader's only means of staying in power is to use mass violence against his own people, he has lost the legitimacy to rule and needs to do what is right for his country by leaving now."

Later, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a statement urging Gadhafi to step down.

"Moammar Gadhafi has lost the confidence of his people and he should go without further bloodshed and violence," Clinton said. "The Libyan people deserve a government that is responsive to their aspirations and that protects their universally recognized human rights."

Tripoli's Green Square, occupied by pro-Gadhafi demonstrators on previous evenings, was empty Saturday night, a witness told CNN. She said her neighborhood near the square was eerily quiet.

Another man said men carrying automatic weapons had set up checkpoints at "every major intersection or traffic light," while hospitals are heavily guarded by armed security personnel.

Other frightened residents said they stayed indoors, though unable to shut off the sound of gunfire or put aside the words of Gadhafi in a public address the day before in which he vowed to keep unleashing force.

"We can destroy any assault with the people's will, with the armed people," he said on state television Friday. "And when it is necessary, the weapons depots will be open to all the Libyan people to be armed."

Libya's prime minister, meanwhile, announced on state television that every family would receive 500 Libyan dinars ($406) from the government.

The humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders said in a statement Saturday one of its teams was in Benghazi. Their arrival, and a promise of future aid, marked one of the first humanitarian inroads into Libya in recent weeks.

Three main hospitals were all "well equipped and have managed to deal with the numbers of wounded people and medical needs," according to the group. But the facilities also face shortages of drugs, bandages and other medical items, which Doctors Without Borders said it will provide. The group plans to send an orthopedic surgeon, anesthesiologist and nurse on Monday.

The advocacy group Human Rights Watch said the situation was appreciably worse in Zawiya -- about 55 kilometers (35 miles) west of Tripoli and the epicenter of violent protests Thursday.

"West of Tripoli in Zawiya city, government security forces firing on demonstrators are causing bloodshed and chaos," said Sarah Leah Whitson, the group's Middle East and North Africa director.

Operations at several embassies -- including those of Great Britain and the United States -- in Tripoli have been effectively shuttered, for the safety of their personnel. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he planned to speak with Obama in Washington on Monday.

For now, Libyans themselves are left to wait to see what happens next.

"We wait and see what tomorrow will bring," a Tripoli man said early Sunday. "We pray for a quick ending to this nightmare, with minimum bloodshed. No one is naive, however, to believe that Gadhafi is going to go easily."

That supervisory officials are a good deal wringing this hands nearly the alcoholic (formerly caffeinated) drink, Four Loko, reveals which such a fears hold not anything to do investing in likely half effects of mixing caffeine and alcohol. No, Four Loko’s top notch sin is the present it is popular.

According to the Phusion Projects website, the organization was based by 3 college friends in 2005 who took out a compact economy bankrolling and “put such a interest methods on the line.” Four ages then the firm had 90 workforces and annual dealings of $144 million as of October 31, 2010, according to the Symphony IRI Group, a economy investigation organization founded in Chicago.

The colorful 23-ounce cans surrounded by candy-sweet flavors as if watermelon, grape, and fruit punch, contain 156 milligrams of caffeine (approximately as even as a cup of coffee), 12 per cent alcohol by volume, and detriment throughout $3 a can. Because of this size, cost, and flavor, Four Loko eventually became a prefered with college under graduates uncovering the earth of alcoholic fuel drinks.

In 2009 sells of Joose alcoholic fuel drink packages tripled to 1.3 million examples in the U.S., additonally Phusion Projects’ Four Loko and Four Maxed increased by 2,680 per cent in the same 12-month period. During such time, as college students, who aren’t spot on well&wshyp;known for the self-control, commenced to squander these types of packages providing greater frequency, shocker stories initiated to surface something like examples of alcohol poisoning and a good deal more injuries taking place additonally college under graduates consumed alcoholic fuel drinks.

As the media picked up and ran through the theme of irresponsible college partiers drinking too a good deal (as if it never occurred before Four Loko), campuses commenced banning the drinks and sector attorneys overall started petitioning the FDA to allure the product on market.

Though there isn’t everything individual new nearly Four Loko (Red Bull has been heard combined provided vodka ever since the late ’90s), and there is no true evidence the current the combination of alcohol and caffeine poses a specific well being chance for ok adults who drink the combo in moderation, Phusion Projects along amid a good deal more manufacturers of AEDs “voluntarily” pulled this packages out of the sale at the end of 2010. Since then, Phusion Projects has reformulated Four Loko, producing out the caffeine and reintroducing the product to boom in 2011.

Despite the thing such a the Phusion Projects has gone to good and costly lengths to appease worrywarts, reformulating such a product and much initiating mortgage aide to build alcohol-education programs on college campuses, a little are a good deal complaining the present the product could easily end up “in the incorrect hands.” They fear such a youngsters can nonetheless be attracted to the big colorful cans. The makers of Four Loko are maybe praying too all of this purchaser appear coming back to the product — properties like to persist as a company. Based on the lamentations of Loko fans in the wake of its “demise,” multiple perhaps are able to end up with to drinking it and one or two of people repeat borrowers are able to perhaps be underage. But when Phusion Projects, a multi-million dollar firm and employer of all but 100 people, be punished while minors are somehow taking out such a hands on a product such a is illegal for them to purchase?

“I suppose they’re packaged to pull to underage drinkers,” believed Jim Hatch, the Senior Investigator of Erie County, New York’s Sheriff’s Office.

Well, Mr. Hatch, whose job is it to acquire absolute minors aren’t illegal getting Four Loko? Is it Phusion Projects’ job or the job of law enforcement authorities the as the Sheriff’s Office?

The main event of UFC 127, pitting B.J. Penn against Jon Fitch in a welterweight number one contender bout, went about the way many fans and pundits expected, at least on one side.

What no one expected was a majority draw -- but that's exactly what happened.

Fitch, the consensus best welterweight in the world not named Georges St. Pierre, did what he does best, and got his grind on for three rounds.

Penn, a former welterweight champion, used his boxing to set up his takedowns. He dragged Fitch to the mat multiple times and advanced his position, taking his back and nearly sinking in a rear naked choke on a few separate occasions.

Although the thought was Fitch was the better wrestler, it was Penn that came running out of the gate, looking to drag the fight to the floor. He managed to do so on a couple different occasions and also threatened with a couple of rear naked chokes.

But this wasn't Fitch's first rodeo.

Star-divide

Fitch used his outstanding submission defense to avoid the slick grappling of "The Prodigy," one of the best jiu-jitsu artists in the sport of MMA.

The first two rounds were a see-saw in action, both fighters taking the other down and imposing their will at different points of the bout.

There was no doubt that Fitch took the third but at that point, it was up in the air as far as the scoring from the judges in the first two rounds.

As it turns out, they couldn't make up their mind to decide a clear winner.

So we end the night with the second draw in the last three numbered UFC events.

What do you think, Maniacs? Agree or disagree?

The co-main event of UFC 127: "Penn vs. Fitch" from Sydney, Australia featured a heavily hyped match-up pitting Michael Bisping vs. Jorge Rivera.

And it certainly came through with the necessary fireworks, as Michael Bisping exacted the revenge he wanted so badly with a second round technical knockout win over Jorge Rivera.

Directly after, he walked up to a rocked "El Conquistador" and told him he needed to apologize for all the shit he talked in the lead-up to the fight. He even spit at Rivera's corner.

"The Count" admitted to his sensitivity in the post-fight interview with Joe Rogan though and said he was sorry for overreacting when the fight was called.

All that said, it was an impressive performance for the British striker, who kept the pressure on the whole way.

Star-divide

It didn't come without a bit of controversy however, not including the post-fight shenanigans. In the opening frame, Bisping landed a clearly illegal knee on a downed Rivera that cost him a point.

The fight was nearly called when Rivera was essentially unresponsive for a short period of time.

As it turned out, the 37 year-old was able to continue and came out with a renewed vigor after the bout was restarted. The overhand right he was looking to land, a la Dan Henderson at UFC 100, just never found a home.

The constant pressure "The Count" was able to apply was too much for the old man to handle, as he gassed and it almost looked as if he let himself get punched out to bring the fight to a close.

An impressive performance from Bisping, who showcased his striking along with his wrestling en route to the technical knockout win. So what's next for the surging middleweight contender?

Thoughts?

Ugh. Hong Kong's English daily South China Morning Post has a distinctly unsavory dispatch from the Chinese media this morning: Government scientists have released research that millions of acres of Chinese agricultural land and over 12 million tons of Chinese grain are contaminated by toxic metal pollution, according to this week's edition of the China Economic Weekly, a state-run magazine.

Last week, a separate article reported that 10% of Chinese rice contained excess cadmium, a heavy metal known to cause cancer.

Beijing quickly responded to last week's news by announcing it was re-focusing its efforts to reign in heavy metal pollution over the weekend, identifying 4500 operations across the nation, including chemical manufacturers, battery manufacturers and mines, to be put under stricter controls. Today's SCMP article says the farmland pollution is particularly bad in China's southwestern Yunnan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces.

The polluting effects of China's rapid industrialization are hardly news. But the industrial clusters cropping up in the nation's farm belts present new problems. Food safety in China in the past few years has primarily been framed as a problem of corruption in the supply chain, as was the case in the melamine scandal, or the overuse of pesticides, insecticides and chemical fertilizers in agriculture. Crop contamination by heavy metals from nearby industry that soak into the soil did not start this year — in fact the rice samples used to determine the 10% contamination rate were taken back in 2007 — but the scope of the problem is just beginning to be fully comprehended.

The domestic health ramifications of this information will take even longer to determine. China's has a growing list of what have come to be known as “cancer villages” — towns next door to badly regulated factories where myriad forms of pollution have caused high cancer rates in residents. In January, to name one example, a battery factory was forced to close after more than 200 children living in its vicinity were diagnosed with high levels of lead in their blood in Anhui province, just west of Shanghai. (Read about how your jeans might be contributing to China's industrial health problems.)

So what happens when this kind of contamination is spread to millions of Chinese consumers, albeit at lower levels? (China exports relatively little rice; the U.S., for instance, only imported about $4 million in rice from China in 2010, compared to $13 million in soybeans.) Rice, China's staple food, turns out to be a particularly good conduit for the metal cadmium, particularly hybrid rice varieties that are planted in acidic soils, as is widely the case in southwest China. And cadmium is not the kind of thing you want to be ingesting in vast quantities. OSHA describes it as an “extremely toxic metal” with the following effects from acute and chronic exposure:

* Acute — Indicates that metal fume fever may result from acute exposure with flu-like symptoms of weakness, fever, headache, chills, sweating and muscular pain. Acute pulmonary edema usually develops within 24 hours and reaches a maximum by three days. If death from asphyxia does not occur, symptoms may resolve within a week.
* Chronic — Identifies the most serious consequence of chronic cadmium poisoning is cancer (lung and prostate). The first observed chronic effect is generally kidney damage, manifested by excretion of excessive (low molecular weight) protein in the urine. Cadmium also is believed to cause pulmonary emphysema and bone disease (osteomalcia and osteoporosis). The latter has been observed in Japan ("itai-itai" disease) where residents were exposed to cadmium in rice crops irrigated with cadmium-contaminated water. Cadmium may also cause anemia, teeth discoloration (Cd forms CdS) and loss of smell (anosmia).

The China Economic Weekly report estimates economic losses from contaminated rice could be as much as $3 billion a year. But that's making a big assumption — that the metal-laced rice gets pulled out of the supply chain and counted as a loss. It's highly unlikely that millions of tons of rice in China are going to go through the kind of highly standardized testing this would require. The long-term costs of dealing with large swaths of the Chinese population that slowly ingest cadmium with potential effects ranging from kidney damage to bone disease are, to put it lightly, harder to calculate.

t doesn't move and it certainly doesn't transform, but we're still not sure we'd stand anywhere near this jagged metal contraption ripped right out of the silver screen. The giant Megatron tank replica from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen not only looks like it'd grind us up like so much beef beneath its spiky treads, it reportedly weighs five tons and stands eight feet tall. It's allegedly constructed entirely out of scrap metal by a designer known as "Steel Legend" -- a honorific that we imagine few will dare question now. If only it could take on junkyard Optimus Prime in a Beijing Battle Royale. More pics of the tank at our source links below!
