UFC 127 results: BJ Penn and Jon Fitch fight to a draw

The main event of UFC 127, pitting B.J. Penn against Jon Fitch in a welterweight number one contender bout, went about the way many fans and pundits expected, at least on one side.

What no one expected was a majority draw -- but that's exactly what happened.

Fitch, the consensus best welterweight in the world not named Georges St. Pierre, did what he does best, and got his grind on for three rounds.

Penn, a former welterweight champion, used his boxing to set up his takedowns. He dragged Fitch to the mat multiple times and advanced his position, taking his back and nearly sinking in a rear naked choke on a few separate occasions.

Although the thought was Fitch was the better wrestler, it was Penn that came running out of the gate, looking to drag the fight to the floor. He managed to do so on a couple different occasions and also threatened with a couple of rear naked chokes.

But this wasn't Fitch's first rodeo.

Star-divide

Fitch used his outstanding submission defense to avoid the slick grappling of "The Prodigy," one of the best jiu-jitsu artists in the sport of MMA.

The first two rounds were a see-saw in action, both fighters taking the other down and imposing their will at different points of the bout.

There was no doubt that Fitch took the third but at that point, it was up in the air as far as the scoring from the judges in the first two rounds.

As it turns out, they couldn't make up their mind to decide a clear winner.

So we end the night with the second draw in the last three numbered UFC events.
