Or is it Enes Kanter? Or dunking Derrick Williams? I maintain Irving is the prize of this extremely weak draft, but even that’s not saying much. Whether or not Irving is a franchise point guard remains to be seen – he played in just 11 games as a freshman (scoring double figures in all of them, shooting 52 percent, and getting to the line with ease), and very few point guards have left college after their freshman year and instantly been successful in the NBA.

Minnesota has the best shot at the top pick, but because of Ricky Rubio, they don’t need a point guard (enter David Kahn joke here). Wolves’ fans shouldn’t hold out hope, anyway – since 1985 when the lottery started, only four teams with the worst record got the top pick.

This is a pivotal night or the Cavs – who are sending owner Dan Gilbert’s 14-year-old son to Secaucus – who went from the best record last year with LeBron to the second worst record in the league this year without him. They also have the Clippers’ lottery pick, so in a perfect world, they’d get the 1st and 2nd overall picks. Cleveland fans are hoping the 2011 draft will do for the franchise what the 1986 draft did for the franchise. On that day, they landed Brad Daughtery (1st), Ron Harper (8th) and Mark Price (25th, via trade). Not a bad haul.

If they were able to secure Irving, a studly shooting guard (Alec Burks, Klay Thompson or rapidly-rising Marshon Brooks), and a frontcourt player (Kanter? Biyombo? a Morris twin?), that certainly would be a start to the resurgence.

My guess on the lottery winner: Cleveland.

about 21 hours ago: Texas Rangers starting pitcher Derek Holland (45) throws during the first inning of the baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels in Arlington, Texas, Saturday, May 14, 2011. (AP Photo/LM Otero)

The Rangers had opportunities yesterday, didn't take advantage of them, and ended up falling, 3-2, to the Angels in a game that could have gone either way.

Neftali Feliz was unavailable, so I don't know who else you would have wanted pitching the 9th other than Darren Oliver. I still don't get, however, why Yorvit Torrealba was allowed to hit in the 9th. The Rangers probably lose even if Mike Napoli or Craig Gentry hits for Torrealba, but they have a better chance of winning if they go with someone else.

Jeff Wilson's game story talks about the critical top of the 9th, when Oliver allowed a run after thinking he'd struck out Bobby Abreu twice on check swings.

Todd Wills' game story discusses the pen letting the Angels escape with a win.

Evan Grant offers his post-game thoughts here. Calvin Watkins' post-game take is here.

Gil Lebreton takes Feliz to task for his failure to "cowboy up" and take the ball yesterday.

Wilson has a story about Endy Chavez's return to the major leagues.

Wills' notes include Chavez talk, discussion of the Rangers' disabled list issues, and Feliz's struggling to find a groove since being activated from the d.l.

THOUGH TONIGHT WILL give fans plenty of boxing action, a paradise of pugilism if you will, all eyes will again be focussed on Las Vegas for one of the biggest fights of the year so far.

However, one of the men who will take to the ring in the main event at the MGM Grand tonight could do a lot worse than cast an eye to another of tonight’s fights, as a warning for what may happen if he’s not careful.

‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley takes on Manny Pacquaio in a welterweight contest with his status as a great boxer set in stone. One of the best lightweights of his generation, Mosley went unbeaten through his first 38 fights, and since then he has overcome the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Antonio Margarito. However, he has won only eight of his last 16 contests and though he has never been knocked out, Mosley is beginning to look like a fighter who should hang up the gloves for good and for his own good.

Another fighter who most definitely falls into that category, and regrettably has done for a long time, is Evander Holyfield. ‘The Real Deal’ medalled at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, but 27 years later he is still a full-time professional.

Ahead of his fight with Brian Nelson tonight, it is clear to see how Holyfield’s health has deteriorated. In the ring his reflexes are slow, his movements plodding and outside of it, alarmingly, his speech slurs. He should not be fighting, simply, and that he is allowed to do so is ridiculous.

Sugar

Shane Mosley does not suffer from the same problems, thankfully, but his skills have diminished and at the age of 39 he should be strongly urged to hang up his gloves.

By now he should be retired, working as a pundit or on the after-dinner circuit, or doing anything he so chooses. For that matter, following substantial career earnings (he is set to earn $5m from tonight alone) he shouldn’t need to do anything if that is what he wants.

Questions about his wellbeing already being asked, and to put Shane in against a strong, quick opponent seems a terrible decision on behalf of his management.

While a great performance and win by Mosley tonight would prove his doubters wrong (yours truly included), I just can’t see it happening. This contest will almost certainly be one-sided, perhaps dangerously so. Shane has never been knocked out, but pride in that fact could keep him on his feet for longer than necessary tonight.

Mosley’s management, who are putting him into the ring tonight, will also need to take him out just as quickly if needs be. I also hope they cast an eye towards Evander Holyfield and realises what can go wrong if he doesn’t bow out gracefully before it’s too late.

If Pacquaio-Mosley is tonight’s main course, then the International Heavyweights Prizefighter event in London is a more-than-adequate appetiser.

The quality of the event has been diluted somewhat with the withdrawal of three of its best competitors, but for the honorary Irishman taking part tonight, overall victory could be a massive career boost.

Based in Cork but originally from Cuba, Mike Perez has fought 11 of his 13 professional fights here in Ireland. None of his opponents are recognisable but to hardcore fans – his most notable achievement was 2 wins on the same night in Limerick 12 months ago.

Tonight he requires three wins in the one evening, but if he manages to do that, then Perez will instantly become one of the most recognised heavyweights in these islands.

Perez is the bookies’ favourite tonight but he faces a tough night regardless. Among his potential opponents are former British champion Michael Sprott, unbeaten Romanian Lucian Bot and knockout-specialist Tye Fields of Canada. None are great fighters, but all pack a punch.

This particular Prizefighter may lack somewhat in quality, but it will be entertaining, and as Audley Harrison and Willie Casey can testify, overall victory can transform a fighter’s career.

+++

Also tonight Sebastian Sylvester and Karo Murat are both in action in a bill in Germany and, as I’ve already outlined, Evander Holyfield headlines a card in Denmark which is probably best missed.

Kelly Pavlik fights Alfonso Lopez and Jorge Arce is in action against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in two interesting bouts, both of which are on the Pacquaio-Mosley card in Las Vegas. Before all of that, on Saturday afternoon, Mullingar’s John Joe Nevin will fight for Paris United in the World Series of Boxing Final against The Astana Arlans – that takes place this afternoon Irish time.

Invite you mates around and make sure the fridge is full – it’s going to be great.

+++

Tributes have poured in for the late Henry Cooper this week, and rightly so. Boxing’s only Knight passed away on Monday, two days shy of his 77th birthday.

As virtually every broadcaster has told you this week, Cooper is best known for his two fights against Muhammad Ali – in 1963 he floored the then Cassius Clay in the fourth round of their bout at Wembley Stadium, and it looked like the young American was on the rocks.

The urban legend that Clay’s trainer Angelo Dundee ripped open his man’s glove, forcing the need for a replacement and thus giving Clay more time is not true, but the trainer did use smelling salts to revive his boxer, which was illegal.

It was also enough to wake Clay who would go on to win the fight in the next round.

Rather than remembering a defeat though, I’m going to share with you one of the finest knockouts to ever occur in a British ring. In 1959 Cooper won his first British Title with a stunning stoppage of Joe Erskine in the third of their five fights. To quote another late great, Harry Carpenter, Erskine was left “arched like a bow over the bottom rope.”

Prominent British promoter ‘Meaty’ Mick Hennessy has been hit with two significant blows this week.

His most notable fighter, Carl Froch, has defected to Matchroom (run by Barry and Eddie Hearn) in a move that will lead to legal wrangling, but also better television exposure for Froch who certainly deserves it.

Just 24 hours later, the British Board of Boxing Control then took away Hennessy’s right to stage the much-anticipated British Heavyweight Title Fight between Derek Chisora and Tyson Fury. The Board decided his proposed venue of Marbella in Spain wasn’t satisfactory, though why exactly this is the case is unclear. In 2007, Brian Magee and Tony Oakey contested the British Light Heavyweight at the Point in Dublin.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who happens to be one of the best basketball players of all time, announced Tuesday that he has cancer.

He revealed that he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia about a year ago.

"Having lost one of my closest friends to a different, highly aggressive form of leukemia, I knew how serious my diagnosis was," said Abdul-Jabbar. "My own life expectancy became a question mark."

Abdul-Jabbar, 62, was diagnosed with CML in December 2008 and is currently being treated with a medicine that targets the abnormal protein that causes his leukemia.

The father of five is expected to live a full and active life during his treatment.

"I'm telling my story to encourage fellow patients to take charge of their health," he said. "Work closely with your doctor, monitor your disease and, above all, take your medicine."

The Manny Pacquiao Express motors on as Bloody Elbow will cover today's weigh-in for his fight with "Sugar" Shane Mosley. The weigh-ins will stream live on Top Rank Boxing's website at 6 p.m. ET. Check it out on Showtime Extreme as well. [Update] Bad Left Hook's Scott Christ recommends using ESPN or Yahoo!'s stream, or flipping on SportsCenter, which will air the weigh-ins live.

[Update] We are live. James Brown of The NFL Today of CBS is emceeing the event.

Brown running through the career accomplishments of both fighters. Cut to Ines Sainz interviewing Mosley. No clue why she's doing English-language work. Her cadence reminds me of Tyler Hansbrough reading to kids. She asks Shane how he plans to pretend to stop Manny's speed. So. There you have that.

Back to J.B., who is running through the Pacquiao press packet. Oh god, Bob Arum crawls on stage, looking a couple years away from Al Davis. Brent Brookhouse notes that Arum said compared Pacquiao's ability to punch with both hands to an MLB pitcher throwing left- and right-handed. My stream is godawful right now, and I'm not watching ESPN's coverage on SportsCenter.

Teddy Atlas says Mosley has a shot if he hurts Pacquiao early. Good luck with that.

We're on Jimmy Lennon Jr. now. He calls up Shane Mosley to the stage. Mosley wearing a powder blue Adidas track suit, looking like an extra from a Run-DMC video or some sort of Russian coke dealer. Pacquiao comes to the stage now. Yellow logo t-shirt with a red sweat suit. They begin to undress.

Mosley to the scale first. Smattering of applause and jeers. Looks good. Lennon announces Shane Mosley weighs in at 147 pounds.

Pacquiao up now. Good reaction. He flexes for the crowd, which gets a pop. Manny Pacquiao weighs in at 145 pounds. Big "Man-ny!" cheer goes up.

Gentle staredown. They shake and embrace.

Atlas notes that Mosley's "skin looks good" and that he isn't "ashy." Also noted that Mosley didn't grab immediately for liquids, so he thinks the cut went well.

Star-divide

The weigh-ins (and tomorrow night's fight) are taking place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao and Mosley will fight at the welterweight (147 lb.) limit, with Pacquiao's WBO welterweight title up for grabs.

Pacquiao is 52-3-2 and the current WBC Super Welterweight World Champion and the WBO Welterweight World Champion. He is the first boxer to win the lineal title in four separate weight classes. He hasn't lost since Erik Morales took a unanimous decision over him in March of 2005, and he obliterated Antonio Margarito over twelve rounds in Cowboys Stadium in November.

Mosley is 46-6-1 with 1 no contest. He drew with Sergio Mora in his last fight in September. He dropped an uncompetitive decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May of 2010, with his last victory coming over Antonio Margarito by TKO in January of 2009.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — After sweating through crisp white shirts and expensive suits for more than three decades, Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams is finally ready to take it easy.

Williams announced his retirement Thursday, saying "it's the right time" for him to end a career in which he led his alma mater to the 2002 national championship.

Williams coached for 33 years, the last 22 at Maryland, where he played as a guard from 1964-67.

"My entire career has been an unbelievable blessing. I am fiercely proud of the program we have built here," Williams said. "I couldn't have asked any more from my players, my assistant coaches, the great Maryland fans and this great university. Together, we did something very special here."

His career record is 668-380, including 461-252 at Maryland. Under his direction, the Terrapins went to the NCAA tournament 14 times, won or shared three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and reached the Final Four twice.

Williams was a fiery competitor who despised losing and loved the challenge of competing against the best teams in the nation – including Duke, which usually got the best of him. But the Terrapins never went down without a fight, and rarely did Williams ever take a seat on the bench.

His frenzied style, and his propensity to sweat on the sideline more than his players, was as much a part of his legend as wins and losses.

"I love Gary. What he has done for Maryland and for college basketball is remarkable," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "He is one of the great coaches of all time. He is a coaches' coach and an ultimate competitor. His retirement is a big loss for the ACC and for college basketball."

Williams, 66, arrived at Maryland in 1989, when the program was still struggling under the weight of NCAA violations. The Terps endured two straight losing seasons before reaching the NCAA tournament for the first time under his direction in 1994, and he never had another sub-.500 season the rest of the way.

"Gary Williams is a legend," Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said. "His accomplishments on the court have earned him a place among the elite in college basketball history. But Gary's legacy here at Maryland goes far beyond basketball. From his philanthropic efforts to his tireless work with fans and alumni to his impact with our students, Gary has left an indelible mark of excellence on this university."

Since 2004, Williams has served as the scholarship co-chair for Great Expectations, Maryland's $1 billion fundraising campaign. His efforts on behalf of Maryland students have helped raise over $240 million for scholarships at the school.

The retirement announcement comes one season after the Terrapins endured a 19-14 record and missed both the NCAA tournament and the NIT. Also, on Wednesday, standout center Jordan Williams formally entered the NBA draft with two years of eligibility left.

Williams began his college coaching career at American University in 1978. He went to Boston College in 1982 and then spent three seasons at Ohio State, from 1986-89, before coming to Maryland.

He had a chilly relationship with Debbie Yow, who served as athletic director at Maryland from 1994-2010. But Yow and Williams were both in Atlanta in 2002 when Williams guided the Terrapins to their lone NCAA title in men's basketball.

"Gary is one of the best X and O coaches in college basketball. He will be greatly missed by Terps everywhere," said Yow, now the athletic director at North Carolina State. "I trust that he will be selected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame soon. Also, his name should be on the Comcast Center floor, as was proposed a year ago."

Williams will stay on with Maryland as assistant athletic director and special assistant to Anderson.

During his time at Maryland, Williams dueled with many of the ACC's most successful coaches. He ranks third in the ACC in wins behind only Dean Smith of North Carolina and Krzyzewski.

"Gary has been an iconic figure in the ACC," ACC commissioner John Swofford said. "His resurrection of the Maryland program to national championship status was huge, not only for the University of Maryland, but the Atlantic Coast Conference as well. His long term consistent success is what I admire the most about Gary. His accomplishments are of Hall of Fame caliber."

Williams, Anderson and University President Dr. Wallace D. Loh will attend a press conference on campus Friday for the formal announcement of the coach's retirement.

Some of the outstanding players to play under Williams at Maryland included NBA stars Walt Williams, Juan Dixon, Joe Smith, Greivis Vasquez and Steve Blake.

"What Gary did at Maryland was amazing for the basketball program, the university, but most of all for the players who he coached," said Jimmy Patsos, Williams' former assistant and now head coach at Loyola (Md.). "I would not be a head coach if not for Gary, and there are a lot of NBA players who would not be in the league if not for him.

"I think what epitomizes Gary as a coach is to look at the NBA playoffs now and see Steve Blake and Greivis Vasquez. A lot of people never expected them to be great players, even in college, but through Gary's coaching, they became All-Americans at Maryland and great NBA players."

Williams' decision to step down began a buzz that covered much of the state of Maryland.

"Gary's leadership and outstanding coaching and recruiting abilities have developed the talents and skills of some of today's best athletes, and helped them to become great professionals and individuals with confidence and character – on and off the court," Maryland governor Martin O'Malley said. "In 2001, he led the Terps to their first Final Four in school history, and in 2002, they brought home an NCAA national championship.

"Though it will be difficult to imagine men's basketball at College Park without Gary Williams, we certainly wish him much success in the future."

Manny Pacquaio will show solidarity with Hip-Hop culture by having Miami emcee Rick Ross walk him to the ring for his May 7 showdown with Shane Mosley.

Ross confirmed the news yesterday via his Twitter account. Both men became acquainted with each other after participating in Nikes 2010 Boom commercial campaign. Last week, Pacquiaos lifelong friend and assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez endorsed Ross Maybach Music brand via a Youtube video.

Ross has engaged in public feuds with both Floyd Mayweather, Pacquiaos main rival, and Mayweathers close friend 50 Cent over perceived slights in Ross Mafia Music. 50 has publicly supported Mayweather in several fights, most notably accompanying him to the ring for his record-breaking 2007 showdown with Oscar De La Hoya.

High-profile boxers have sought out rap figures to enhance their ring walks since the mid 90′s, including Naseem Hamed (Diddy), Roy Jones Jr (Method Man and Redman), Cory Spinks (Nelly) and Mike Tyson (Tupac Shakur).

May 7 will mark the first time Pacquiao has done a ring walk with a rapper. At press time, neither Pacquiao nor Ross have disclosed what music will be used.

Nice statistical look at the book on guarding the Miami Heat, including this blurb about Paul Pierce's defense on LeBron.
According to Newmann and Oliver, Pierce checked LeBron 69 percent of the time, with Rajon Rondo, Jeff Green and Marquis Daniels (no longer with the team) filling in the rest. But against Pierce, LeBron shot just 43 percent from the field and his efficiency plummeted to depths rarely seen from him. In fact, LeBron scored 75 points per 100 possessions with Pierce covering him, down from his 93 points per 100 possessions when guarded by all other Celtics defenders.

Not going to label Pierce with the term "LeBron Stopper" because he's still going to get his points, but it is nice to know that the stats back up what we've all seen: Pierce gives James as hard a time as anyone.

We had all heard the rumors build to a fever pitch, but it was still hard to believe the Falcons would give up so much to move up into the top ten. Now we have our confirmation.

The Atlanta Falcons gave up 2011 and 2012 first round picks, a 2011 second round pick and both 2011 and 2012 fourth round picks. It's an audacious move, one that flies in the face of everything the team has done in its careful quest to build a championship team over the last three years. It's a move that will define Thomas Dimitroff's tenure in Atlanta, fairly or not.

Let's tackle Julio Jones first. A big (roughly 6'3') wide receiver, an excellent blocker and a phenomenal physical specimen, Jones could make a case for the most electrifying offensive threat in the draft outside of Cameron Newton. The knocks on the guy are his hands--Roddy White showed us you can overcome that witness--and some concerns over injuries. If he can answer those, he's going to be an awesome pro.

The Falcons saw the need to upgrade their offense and have unquestionably done it. Moving Jenkins and Douglas into a timeshare in the slot gives the team situational versatility while putting two extremely talented wideouts on the outside in White and Jones. They're going to be a nightmare for opposing and Jones has the potential to be an all-time great. I truly believe that.

The drawbacks? The Falcons gave up way too much to get Jones. Those picks could have been used to get multiple quality players, and the team may regret it in the next draft if players they want are available in the first round and they're not there to pick. Given Thomas Dimitroff's penchant for making great picks in every round, the fact that the Falcons gave up a huge bounty scares me more than a little bit.

In short, Dimitroff has balls of steel, the Falcons gave up way too much, but Jones is a potentially elite talent who may could transform the team's offense. With its blank eyes and steady hands, time alone can tell us whether it was the right move.

The Rams upgraded their defense in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, as they took NC junior defensive end Robert Quinn with the 14th pick of the first round.

Here’s the scouting report for Quinn from Walter Football

Strengths:
Elite athlete
Speed and short area quickness
Explodes off edge
Gets off blocks
Pass rush skills
Long arms
Forces fumbles
Scheme versatile
Plenty of upside

Weaknesses:
Run defense needs improvement
Inconsistent snap reaction
Lacked production against top competition
Only two years of college football
Suspended for 2010 season
Medical – benign tumor removed in high school

Summary: Robert Quinn was one of the Tar Heels suspended for the season and as a result has a lot to prove. The athletic talent is evident from his sophomore campaign, but taking a year off is never a good thing. Nevertheless, he has the ability to play 4-3 defensive end or convert to outside linebacker in a 3-4. Pass-rushers are a hot commodity in the NFL, and he can get after the quarterback.

Player Comparison: DeMarcus Ware. Quinn has been quoted as saying he wants to be the “first Robert Quinn.” I’m afraid if I don’t liken him to an elite talent, he might come after me. He does have similar potential. Ware was also a work in progress against the run coming out of Troy, and while he timed faster, Quinn’s inactivity due to his suspension has to be factored in. Noted draft guru Mike Mayock of NFL Network expected Quinn to blow up the Combine – which is something Ware certainly did – but the time off prevented that from happening. However, Quinn has a similar innate ability to get after the quarterback.

Matt’s Take: The Rams want to pressure the QB more in 2011, and they are hoping that the junior can do that. He’s a solid guy off the edge, and also has great speed, which will upgrade the position. The Rams should benefit from this pick, a guy that will help the defense and it’s an area of need for the team heading into the offseason.

The Rockies and Mets conclude their 4 game series with Game 2 of their double-header at Citi Field. The Mets will send LHP Chris Capuano (1-0, 6.75 ERA) to the mound in hopes of salvaging the final game of their current 7 game homestand(1-5 currently). In his first start for the Mets he was not particularly sharp, but effective enough to pick up the win. Across his 6 IP, he gave up 4 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 8 Washington Nationals. Capuano has solid career numbers against the Rockies, compiling a 4-3 record, over 51.1 IP, and has an ERA of 2.98. Mets’ killer Troy Tulowitzki is 3-3 in his career against Chris Capuano including a Home Run

On the mound for the Rockies is LHP Jorge De La Rosa (1-0, 1.74 ERA). His first two starts of the year were both cut short by a lingering blister on his pitching hand. Over those two starts he only went 10.1 IP. Del La Rosa has a record of 3-1 and an ERA of 4.30 in 9 appearances (3 starts) against the Mets in his career.

Game time is 4:15PM. Here are the starting lineups:

For the 9-2 Colorado Rockies:

1. Dexter Fowler CF

DETROIT — Texas slugger Josh Hamilton is expected to miss six to eight weeks after breaking his upper right arm on a headfirst dive into home plate Tuesday, a daring dash the AL MVP later called "stupid."

Hamilton tried to score from third on a foul popup near the Detroit dugout in the first inning. Third baseman Brandon Inge and catcher Victor Martinez both chased the ball, leaving the plate unprotected.

Inge made the catch, then tossed the ball to Martinez, who scampered back in time to tag Hamilton.

"It was a stupid play," Hamilton said. "The whole time the ball was in the air, the coach was yelling, 'Go, there's no one at home,' and I was thinking, 'I don't want to do this, something is going to happen.'

"But I listened to my coach," he said, referring to third-base coach Dave Anderson. "It was way too aggressive. Maybe if they had both been closer to me, but they had a perfect angle to cut me off, and the only way to avoid a tag in that situation is to go head first."

Hamilton slid headfirst earlier in the inning on an RBI triple. The Tigers wound up winning 5-4.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels defended Anderson's decision to send Hamilton.

"We play an aggressive style of baseball," he said. "The chances of getting hurt on that play are minimal."

The AL champion Rangers, off to a 9-2 start, said Hamilton has a non-displaced fracture of the humerus bone at the top of his arm, just below the shoulder. He isn't expected to swing a bat for a month.

The fracture was small enough that it wasn't detected on an X-ray, but Daniels held a conference call about two hours after the game with results from an MRI exam.

"Obviously, he's a big part of our club," Daniels said. "We built the club to deal with something like this."

Texas manager Ron Washington was actually giving Hamilton a breather Tuesday by making him the designated hitter instead of starting him in the outfield. Washington said before the game he planned to give Hamilton the day off entirely on Wednesday.

Now Hamilton's headed to the disabled list, and Daniels said the team will probably call up Chris Davis from Triple-A Round Rock.

Hamilton missed most of the final month of the regular season last year with two broken ribs after he made a catch, then rolled his ankle and stumbled hard into the outfield wall at Minnesota. He was back in time for the postseason and helped Texas reach the World Series.

Hamilton hit .359 with 32 home runs and 100 RBIs in 2010. He's hitting .333 this season.

In 2009, Hamilton was limited to 89 games when he had two stints on the disabled list after separate wall-crashing catches.

The Rangers gave him a $24 million, two-year contract in February, avoiding arbitration.

Manny Ramirez retired from baseball Friday instead of facing a 100-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, according to two people briefed on the matter.

Ramirez tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug during spring training and was recently informed of the positive result, according to the people.

In a news release, the commissioner’s office said it had recently notified Ramirez “of an issue under Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.”

The statement added, “Rather than continue with the process under the Program, Ramirez has informed M.L.B. that he is retiring as an active player.”

The commissioner’s office said that if Ramirez wanted to return to baseball, he would have to face discipline for his positive test.

The positive test in spring training was the third time Ramirez tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

In 2009, he was suspended after his urine sample from spring training had elevated levels of testosterone. The New York Times reported later in 2009 that Ramirez was among the roughly 100 players who tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in 2003, when testing was conducted on an anonymous survey basis.

Ramirez played 66 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010 and 24 games for the Chicago White Sox, hitting .298 with 9 home runs and 42 runs batted in in 90 games.

He signed as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Rays in January and was 1 for 17 in five games this season.

The Rays said in a statement: “We are obviously surprised and disappointed by this news. We will have no further comment on this matter, and our fans and organization will carry on.”

So after six weeks and 49 matches, India have been crowned World Cup winners for a second time.

Some would say it was fate for Sachin Tendulkar – the best batsman of his era.to win in his home city - and some would say it was a measure of the new world order in international cricket with India leading the way both on and off the field with over a billion fans backing them all the way.

India now join the elite pantheon of multiple winners of the premiere tournament in one-day cricket – joining the 1970s West Indies and the modern day Australian team.

But has the 10th World Cup been a good one?

Well, yes and no.

Certainly there have been enough good matches in this tournament to believe there is still life in this format of the game.

Unlike the upstart younger sibling that is Twenty20 cricket, 50-over cricket does allow ebb and flow and more of the flux that makes cricket such a great sport.

Certainly the batting powerplay is an innovation that has worked far better than some of the other concepts conjured up by the ICC - the sub rule anyone?

But what do we have to look forward to now in 50-over cricket?

Not an awful lot is the answer. We now have essentially four years of a never-ending stream of meaningless series - indeed they start as early as next week as Australia go to Bangladesh for three ODIs.

Instant gratification for the insatiable fans on the sub-continent but instantly forgettable for players and fans alike.

The time between World Cups need to have some meaning… which brings us nicely to the format of the 2011 event.

Certainly a shorter World Cup than the ultra-marathon in the West Indies has helped (and having fans in the ground and allowing them to make noise wasn't a bad idea either).

But the ICC dodged a bullet thanks to England's erratic performances.

Although in the end the eight quarter-finalists were the octet everyone expected, England's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against Ireland and Bangladesh meant we had an exciting final week of group action.

If the rather low-key end to Group A had been replicated on both sides of the draw, the impetus of the tournament could have been completely lost.

As South Africa proved, topping a group means very little in the 50-over cricket where everyone beats everybody else pretty regularly.

What is needed is for the time between World Cups must be incentive laden.

A league system where the top four nations over a four-year span between tournaments would automatically qualify for the quarter-finals of the next event would be one such motivation.

That would leave teams ranked five and six facing the best two associated nations - who have to come through their own week-long qualifying tournament in a nice little aperitif to the main event.

With teams seven and eight facing nine and ten (you can already chalk in England and West Indies for those two spots).

Of course the money men – and most notably TV companies - need enough matches to justify the tournament. So how about making the quarter-finals, semi-finals and even the final a best-of-three or best-of-five series?

If Cowers was to suggest that India were not the best team in ODI cricket then there would probably be a bovine effigy being burnt in Mumbai right now, but they did tie with England and suffered a three-wicket loss to South Africa.

That is the nature of ODI cricket. If you played the Masters over 18 holes or the World Snooker final over five frames, the outcome is likely to be different.

Would New Zealand have beaten South Africa over five games?

If you want to declare a country as undoubtedly the best team in ODI cricket then extend the format. No-one has ever accused the World Series or the NBA finals of not being a big-time occasion because the title is not decided on a single day.

With only the number of teams - 10 - and not the format of the 2015 event in Australasia decided there is still time for the ICC to think outside the box. And after all, can it be any worse than the Super Six stage?

Cowers is well aware that Spain lost the opening match of the football World Cup and no-one is questioning their right to be lauded as the best team in the world so we will finish by hailing this India team and in particular the skipper MS Dhoni who has the Midas touch.

Ice cool under pressure, Dhoni has led India to the 2007 World Twenty20, to the top of the world Test rankings and now their first 50-over World Cup in 28 years (not to forget that the Chennai Super Kings took the 2010 IPL under his stewardship).

After hitting 91 not out to lead India to victory over Sri Lanka - a captain’s innings to rival that of Clive Lloyd’s in the 1975 World Cup final - with about 17% of the world’s entire population monitoring your every step, Cowers thinks he is worthy of all the rupees that come his way.

MAN OF THE TOURNAMENT: Sachin Tendulkar - more than a billion Indians were hoping that the master batsman reached his 100th international ton on his own patch in the final. The sporting gods were not to allow that but with 482 runs, the little master cemented his reputation as the best batsmen who has ever lived whose name is not Don Bradman. Tendulkar, 37, has not yet indicated when he plans to retire but he could sign off now with a huge amount of pride.

INNINGS OF THE TOURNAMENT: Kevin O'Brien – 113 off 63 balls to embarrass England and give Ireland something they never imagined, a victory in the World Cup over the team who steal all their best players. He might show his grandchildren the footage one day but he will need to photoshop out the pictures of his haircut.

BOWLING SPELL OF THE TOURNAMENT: Lasith Malinga – bemused and bewildered Kenya with 6-38 which included a hat-trick. His devastating round-arm reverse-swinging yorkers are completely unplayable. Given he learnt how to bowl like that on the beaches of his home island, the England Lions are considering sending their young quicks to Margate to learn how to bowl.

FIELDER OF THE TOURNAMENT: Marty 'Two Toes' Guptill – the Kiwi proved that having only seven toes is essentially an advantage when it comes to flying around the covers. Budding youngsters everywhere are now asking their mates to run over their left foot with a forklift truck to remove the superfluous digits.

Is this the man who will finally dethrone the longtime welterweight champion at UFC 129 on April 30 in Toronto?

Star-divide

"To become the UFC welterweight champion would mean everything to me. It's what I've spent my last 11 years pursuing with all my energy. It's something I plan on doing April 30.

"I want to be the best. Can't say you're the best if you're not beating the best and GSP has shown he deserves all the respect and credit he's getting, that's why I want to fight him. A lot of people are expecting me to lose but I have no intentions of doing that.

"I've been wanting to fight GSP for years. You know, I've been in these other shows and heard everyone saying 'GSP, GSP,' saying he's the greatest when I'm over, you know, when I was over in EliteXC beating everyone else, when I was in Strikeforce beating everyone else, Rumble on the Rock and everyone kept talking about GSP. But I kept winning and winning and beating good competition. I have been looking at this guy wanting to fight him for years, so to finally have this opportunity; this is exactly what I'm looking for.

"I'm thinking about going out there and beating him, you know, and they can boo me or cheer me, whatever happens, but I'm going out there to beat GSP."

Adam Dunn had an Adam Chance to positively acquaint himself with White Sox fans when he came to the plate in the first inning. Juan Pierre and Gordon Beckham set the stage with a single and a double off Fausto Carmona, but Dunn fell flat, half-swinging and missing at a fastball on the outside corner. Paul Konerko picked him up with an opposite-field single one batter later.

Dunn would need no such assistance in his second trip. After Beckham led off with a single in the third, Dunn launched his first American League home run to double the White Sox's lead. Carlos Quentin would double up on two-run homers before the inning was over.

Throw in a two-run double that knocked Fausto Carmona out of the game one inning later, and Dunn's debut was a dandy. He went 2-for-4 with four RBI as part of an 18-hit assault en route to an 15-10 victory on Opening Day.

Quentin matched him again in that fourth inning, smoking a two-run double off the wall as the Sox scored eight runs in the fourth. Quentin grabbed the game lead in RBI in the process with five, and the Sox led 14-0. Mark Buehrle and his comfortable pitch count had a very comfortable lead.

Perhaps everybody was a little too comfortable.

Star-divide

First, Ozzie Guillen lifted many of his starters after the top of the sixth, which Buehrle took as a signal to engage strike-throwing mode. The Indians took advantage, touching him up for four runs on five straight hits over just 10 pitches.

And once the Indians got a taste of hitting, they didn't want to stop. They lit up Will Ohman for two homers (one a lefty), as the LOOGY couldn't get through a full inning in his White Sox debut. A Lastings Milledge non-error error (dropped a "double" he should've had) extended an inning, leading to two more runs to make it interesting.

Even Jesse Crain had to work way too hard, needing 34 pitches to survive the ninth. He struck out Jack Hannahan with two runners on to end the game.

Had Hannahan singled, Matt Thornton was ready in the bullpen. In one form or another, Guillen used up five-sixths of his relief corps when his team had a 14-0 lead.

Notes:

*Buehrle failed to record a strikeout; Crain and Chris Sale had the only two Sox strikeouts all night. The Cleveland staff fanned 14.

*Brent Lillibridge struck out in both of his trips to the plate, giving him 11 in his last 12 regular-season at-bats.

The actual game thread is scheduled to post in about an hour, just before it starts. This thread is going to have to last until then.

Today Ubaldo Jimenez and the Colorado Rockies square off against Ian Kennedy and the Arizona Diamondbacks at Coors Field in the season opener for 2011 for both teams. If this seems a familiar scenario and opponent for opening day, that's because it is. The Rockies were the Diamondbacks first opponent in 1998, and today marks the sixth time since then that the two teams have met in the season opener, outside that inaugural meeting in 1998, the rest of the opening day match-ups have happened over the last decade. The Diamondbacks have also been the most frequent home opening opponent for the Rockies.

On Thursday, the New York Yankees began their regular season at Yankee Stadium, a gleaming $1.5 billion behemoth that opened in the Bronx in 2009 as the new home of one of the richest franchises in sports.

But next to the stadium is a lingering eyesore – a protracted construction project that was supposed to have been transformed into three public ball fields months ahead of opening day. Instead, some coaches and neighborhood residents say, it remains a joyless Mudville.

Just as the new stadium was enveloped in controversy, from its financing to its ticket prices, the construction of the three fields has also prompted debate.

The city promised to build the fields, which are starting to take shape directly across 161st Street to the south of the stadium, to replace others that were bulldozed in 2006 to make way for the stadium.

The razed fields, in Macombs Dam Park, were the only regulation baseball diamonds nearby, and were home to neighborhood pickup games and youth leagues, and to teams from schools like All Hallows High School, a parochial institution several blocks away.

“We’ve gone five years now with no ball fields here,” said Sean Sullivan, 55, the principal of All Hallows and a coach of its baseball team, which has spent five years scouring the city for home fields. “They took the parks away from my kids, and now our team is a bunch of gypsies.”

The team, which played part of its 2009 season in Staten Island, is still searching for a site for its league opener on April 7.

The fields were originally to be completed late last year, as the centerpiece of Heritage Field, a 10-acre park where the former Yankee Stadium stood. But the groundbreaking was delayed until last June, and city officials now say the fields will not open until fall 2011.

“They built the new stadium in record time, but building replacement parkland for the community is literally dragging,” said Helen Foster, who represents the neighborhood on the City Council. “I guarantee you if this was another neighborhood, this project would have been fast-tracked.”

Geoffrey Croft, a frequent critic of the parks department, found fault with the parkland project as shortchanging local residents by putting the new stadium on what was a large, contiguous parcel of natural space, only to replace that property with “scattered and inferior” parks with much less vegetation and natural growth, more artificial surfaces and fewer ball fields.

Ms. Foster and other critics blamed city officials for the Heritage Field delays, saying they allowed the old stadium to remain intact long after the team’s final season there, so items could be painstakingly removed for sale as memorabilia.

Adrian Benepe, the city’s parks commissioner, said the delays were a result of various complications, including tightened restrictions on dismantling the old stadium, problems with nearby subway lines and, recently, the particularly cold and snowy winter. He acknowledged that there had been “some inconvenience to the neighborhood” but said that the delays were “not unusual for a complicated project like this.”

“We’re really making an effort to make this a first-rate park,” he said, “as good as any in the city.”

Mr. Benepe said that the sod for the fields would be installed within a month and that progress on the park, which runs along the west side of River Avenue, was “going like gangbusters now.”

“When people look back they don’t say, ‘Did it take longer than we thought?’ ” he said. “They say, ‘Did it deliver what it promised?’ ”

To build the new stadium, more than 22 acres of parkland were cleared, including Macombs Dam Park and a portion of John Mullaly Park. The property included several ball fields – city officials say four, residents insist it was five.

Heritage Field, a $51 million project, is part of a redevelopment of parkland around the stadium that the city was required to undertake by state law, to replace more than 20 acres of parkland taken for the new stadium. Most of the other projects have been completed.

The effort also included creating or renovating eight smaller parks, ranging from a skateboard area on River Road to Mill Pond Park, a 10-acre waterfront expanse near the Harlem River with 16 championship-caliber tennis courts, a beach, a seasonal ice rink, and a tennis and skate house. Adjacent to Heritage Field is the new Macombs Dam Park, with a sprawling field for football and soccer, a 400-meter track, fitness equipment, a grandstand, four basketball courts and eight handball courts.

The full price of the replacement parks is $195 million, far more than the 2005 estimate of $116 million, according to a 2009 report conducted the city’s Independent Budget Office. City officials said the extra costs resulted from unanticipated environmental cleanup, rising construction costs and project expansions.

Ms. Foster accused the Yankees of doing little to help local residents in one of the poorest parts of the country. “There’s this perception in this area that the Yankees’ needs come before everyone else’s,” she said.

A Yankees spokeswoman said the team donated $10 million to the parks replacement project in 2010, and gave $5.6 million worth of donations – including ballpark events, tickets and merchandise – to various Bronx organizations. The team also helped provide buses for local schools, including All Hallows, in 2009, she said.

Yankees officials said on Wednesday that neighborhood residents have reacted to the parks project in largely positive ways.

“I cannot tell you how many people have come up to me to say thank you because the broken-down parks have been replaced,” said Randy Levine, the team president.

Mr. Sullivan, the All Hallows principal and coach, is still a Yankees fan. Though he has no home field for the school’s team for yet another season, his office is full of Yankees memorabilia, and he has high hopes this year for his team, anchored by an ace pitcher, James Norwood, a heavily scouted right-handed senior.

“I hoped the Yankees could have thrown the kids some tickets and made them feel important during all this,” he said. “I guess we’re just little fish in the big ocean.”

CINCINNATI — Ramon Hernandez hit a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday, rallying the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in an opening-day flashback to their NL Central title season.

The Brewers became the first team in 42 years to open the season with back-to-back homers when Rickie Weeks and Carlos Gomez connected off Edinson Volquez. Ryan Braun also had a solo shot, helping Milwaukee take a 6-3 lead to the ninth.

That's when the Reds reverted to their winning ways of 2010. Their first six wins last season came in their final at-bat, tying the major league record. Hernandez connected off closer John Axford.

The Reds trailed 6-3 when Axford – who set a Milwaukee rookie record with 24 saves last season – let it get away. Cincinnati loaded the bases with none out, but Axford fanned Jay Bruce and got Jonny Gomes to hit a sacrifice fly to deep center.
Story continues below

Hernandez hit an opposite-field homer into the Brewers' bullpen, setting off another hopping home-plate celebration like so many last season. The Reds tied for second-most wins in their final at-bat while taking the NL Central title.

The Brewers have designs on overtaking the NL Central champions after changing managers – Ron Roenicke took over for Ken Macha – and adding Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum to their rotation. One game in, they're one game behind.

The 41-degree first pitch made for the second-coldest opener in Great American Ball Park's nine-year history, prompting the 42,398 fans to bundle in coats and blankets. Volquez warmed up wearing a red hooded sweatshirt.

Then, the Brewers got off to the majors' most sizzling start in decades.

Weeks extended his spring tear with his 22nd career leadoff homer. He led the Brewers with a .442 average and one homer during spring training. Fast starts are no surprise for him – Weeks hit a club-record eight leadoff homers last season.

When Gomez homered into the upper deck two pitches later, the Brewers became the first team in the majors to start a season with a pair of homers since Cincinnati's Pete Rose – who watched from a seat behind home plate on Thursday – and Bobby Tolan connected off Don Drysdale in 1969. Drysdale didn't allow another run in that one, winning 3-2.

Drew Stubbs and National League MVP Joey Votto hit solo homers, but the Reds went to their final at-bat before Hernandez ended it with his three-run shot, his fourth hit of the game.

NOTES: Logan Ondrusek got the victory with one inning in relief. ... The Reds are 65-69-1 on opening day, the Brewers 23-19-1. ... It was the second time the Brewers and Reds opened the season. The other was 2000, when Ken Griffey Jr. returned to his hometown team. The game was rained out as a 3-3 tie. ... The Reds played a tribute to former manager Sparky Anderson on the videoboard before the game. Anderson died in November. The Reds are wearing a "Sparky" patch on their right sleeves. His No. 10 was marked on the back of the mound. ... Rose spent time thumbing through the records section of a Reds media guide while sitting in his seat. He attends several games a season in his hometown. ... The Reds won for the first time in four season openers under manager Dusty Baker.

The St. Louis Rams are a team on the rise. New leadership in the front office and on the field, a super star running back and a fresh faced kid quarterback ready to lead them into the future all helped boost sagging television ratings by 66 percent. Clearly, people are interested in the Rams again.

But St. Louis is a baseball town first and foremost. The Rams are chiseling their way to making it a town big enough for two teams with a national stature (yes, I realize the Blues play there as well...and I love the Note, but...). Today is a holiday of sorts in our fair city. Hell, it's a holiday for half the Midwest, from Indiana to Arkansas to Oklahoma, where the St. Louis Cardinals inspire fanatical devotion.

The Rams may be part of the (once) mighty NFL, but even we Rams fans have to step aside for the Cardinals on opening day. After all, I got my start in this whole blogging business at a little site called Cardinals Diaspora. That work and the recommendation of the venerable lboros founder of Viva El Birdos, the premier Cardinals fan site and our SBN brother, who helped get me my start with this site and SBNation.

Rob Neyer is heading up SBN's baseball efforts now, so be sure to check out that site too.

I'll be yakking it up at Cards Diaspora for a little while this afternoon, so stop by and say howdy.
