Kilauea Eruption 2011
Mount Kilauea in Hawaii started erupting this past weekend, spewing lava as high as 80 feet into the air. While the roads and trails leading up to the eruptions are closed off, authorities say you can safely view the eruption from 1.5 miles away. If you are not in Hawaii, tune in to the webcam, which was the source of the photo posted above. This camera has been placed in a location you couldn't get to, even if you were on the Big Island.
You can make your own erupting model volcano using a bit of chemistry know-how.
1. Use clay to mold the shape of a volcano cone around an empty bottle.
2. Fill the bottle most of the way full of warm water. Warm water speeds the chemical reaction that causes the eruption.
3. Add a squirt of dishwashing detergent. This will help form the bubbly lava of your volcano.
4. Spoon some baking soda into the bottle.
5. When you are ready for the eruption, pour vinegar into your volcano. If you mix some food coloring into the volcano you can get colored lava.
6. Keep the eruption going by adding more baking soda and vinegar.
