Gypsy Rose Lee
Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy Rose Lee (January 8, 1911 to April 26, 1970) was an American burlesque artist, famous for her strptase. She was also an actress, author and playwright, whose memory was made in 1957 the musical and film Gypsy. Gypsy Rose Lee was born Rosa Louise Hovick in Seattle, Washington in 1911, although her mother later razed for three years before the two ages of her daughters. She was first known by her first name, Louise. His mother, Rose Hovick (nee Rose Evangeline Thompson), was a teenage bride fresh from a convent where she married the Norwegian and American John Olaf Hovick, who was a seller of advertising in newspapers and a reporter from the
Seattle Times. Louise’s sister, Ellen Evangeline Hovick (better known as actress June Havoc), was born in 1913.
After their parents divorced, the girls supported the family by appearing in vaudeville [when?] Where talent shone in June, while Louise remained in the background. In 1943 she played herself in “Stage Door Canteen.” By then she was famous: The beautiful and intelligent cleaner who became an international figure. Above all, it was her own creation. Even her name has been invented. She grew up as Rose Louise Hovik.
When asked if she has never explained why she chose the name “Gypsy,” her son, Erik Lee Preminger, said: “His favorite line about this is,” Darling, I said that history so many different ways, I do not remember which one is true. ”
With 18 volumes of scrapbooks, Preminger is still discovering things about his mother. For example: She claimed to be born in 1914, but new research suggests it was 1911, 100 years ago!
“Why do you think people are still interested in your mother?” Braver asked.
“Because people can not believe that a stripper could attract the kind of attention and praise she has done,” he said
