Friday, May 18, 2012

TORONTO - A judge has declared last year's federal election results in a Toronto riding to be null and void due to voting irregularities.

The judge has ordered a byelection in Etobicoke-Centre, which Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj lost by 26 votes to Conservative Ted Opitz.

A Liberal party spokesman says the decision vindicates Wrzesnewskyj's claims.

Joyce Arthur: Hey Parliament, Keep Your Laws Off my Body
Canadian women won equality rights 27 years ago when the gender equality clause in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms took effect. Yet, several times since the turn of the 21st century, parliament has seen fit to debate whether women's rights should be restricted. How can this happen? Fetuses and pregnant women cannot be considered separately. Any examination of alleged fetal rights that does not primarily consider the serious ramifications for pregnant women would be a dangerous sham, and contrary to global human rights standards.

Linda Frum: Hear Us Iran: Canadians Condemn You
If this looks like an ordinary diplomatic photograph -- it is not. In a rare encounter, the Hon. Noel Kinsella, Speaker of the Senate of Canada, summoned Kambiz Sheikh-Hassani, the Iranian Charge d'Affaires, to his chambers. Kinsella demanded the release of all unlawfully held Iranian prisoners of conscience and in particular the Canadian prisoners: Saeed Malekpour, Hossein Derakhshan and Hamid Ghassemi-Shall.
J.J. McCullough: Mulcair: Rising in the East, Setting in the West?
2012-04-27-mediabitesreal.jpgIn this week's editorial pages we got to meet Thomas Muclair, SCARY ENEMY OF NATIONAL UNITY when he railed against the Alberta oil industry. All the western premiers quickly fired back, calling Mulcair's grasp of economics "tenuous and "goofy." But some are conceding that Muclair is being pretty damn "clever" in rejecting one of the dominant pieces of conventional wisdom in post-Harper Canadian politics: that you need the West to win.
Katharine Schmidt: True North Strong and Hungry
We are lucky to live in Canada, a prosperous nation. Sadly, Canadians not being able to afford food exists today. In fact, close to 900,000 individuals turn to food banks for assistance each month across the country -- a number equivalent to the entire population of New Brunswick. This is unacceptable.
